May-white azaleas

SCPCA member Charles Horn is in the process of surveying for May-white azaleas in the state. This past weekend he surveyed Lynch’s Woods park in Newberry County, where the May-white was first documented in 2000. He found 202 plants!

Here are some images of these beautiful azaleas.

  1. Primarily a species of circumneutral bluffs (marble rock influenced possibly) in piedmont counties, eastmanii also occurs in at least two coastal plain counties the Santee area (possible Great PeeDee River) where marl limestone is nearby. Blooming well in moderate shade at native sites, the species is sun sensitive where overstory is removed. The species is heavily frsgrant, possibly the strongest event of any of the 17 deciduous anal a species native to North America.
