The sandhills lily, Lilium pyrophilum, is a lily native to the Sandhills region. In South Carolina it is known to grow in Fort Jackson and in the Buffalo Creek area. There is another good population in the Sandhills refuge.
This species presents a logistical challenge not often encountered in botany: the Fort Jackson plants are in an area subject to military bombing practice, with unexploded shells left behind. This has made it impossible to conduct surveys in recent years, though Bert Pittman and Nicole Hawkins have been working on getting access.
